Robin van Persie was the big buy of last summer's window, but will Gareth Bale be this year's high-profile departure?
It may already seem like ages since the end of the season, but despite all the transfer chitter-chatter and hushed negotiations, it wasn't until today that clubs could officially sign players.
Now they can, we got our man Darren Lewis to comb through each clubs wheelings and dealings so far, as well as taking a look at who they need, what they need and why they need it.
Aston Villa may have been the most active club so far, but do they have enough to kick on from this season's close brush with relegation?
Arsenal have boasted about how much money they've got, but could their lack of early movement have repercussions come the business end of the season?

ARSENAL

Ins: None
Outs: Andrey Arshavin, Sébastien Squillaci, Nicklas Bendtner. (all released), Johan Djourou (loan to Hamburg).
WHAT THEY NEED: With the club’s finances in rude health, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has already promised an “escalation in financial firepower” which is why the club are close to signing Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid. Wayne Rooney remains in their sights while £23million Everton midfielder Maraoune Fellaini is known to be another target.

ASTON VILLA

Ins: Antonio Luna (Sevilla), Leandro Bacuna (Groningen), Aleksandar Tonev (Lech Poznan), Jores Okore (Nordsjaelland), Nicklas Helenius (Aalborg).
Outs: Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest, free), Calum Barrett, Joshua Barton, Courtney Cameron, Daniel Devine, Richard Dunne, Andrew Marshall. (all released).
WHAT THEY NEED: The Villains are some way down the road with their Paul Lambert vision for the future: selling off the older players and bringing in younger, cheaper stars on more sensible wages. What they need most of all, however, is to get striker Christian Benteke to follow Andy Weimann in signing a new deal!! Will be easier said than done with the player one of Tottenham’s top targets.

CARDIFF CITY

Ins: Andreas Cornelius (FC Copenhagen, undisclosed)
Outs: Heidar Helguson, Stephen McPhail, Elliott Parish, Nat Jarvis, Jesse Darko (all released)
WHAT THEY NEED: Cardiff need an injection of quality all over the pitch with an experienced keeper, another prolific striker and a commanding midfielder on their shopping list.
They have already agreed a fee with Celtic with powerful midfielder Victory Wanyama and are still in the hunt for freescoring Vitesse Arnhem marksman Wilfried Bony to play alongside their only signing so far, £7.5m forward Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen.

CHELSEA

Ins: Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen, £17m)
Outs: Todd Kane (Blackburn, loan), Marko Marin (Sevilla, loan), Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid, loan), George Saville (Brentford, loan), Amin Affane, Yossi Benayoun, Abdul Deen-Conteh, Paulo Ferreira, Hilario, Florent Malouda, Archange Nkumu, Ross Turnbull (all released)
WHAT THEY NEED? Firepower up front. They already have defensive steel and a mix of midfielder power and creativity. Now they need more firepower - which is why they will add Napoli’s Edinson Cavani to the signing of Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen. There could yet be some movement in central defence too. Another defender is being targeted anyway and - despite Porto’s resistance - Eliaquim Mangala looks to be the one. But Chelsea could face a fight to hold on to David Luiz with PSG interested.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Ins: None
Outs: None
WHAT THEY NEED: Goals. Particularly with top scorer Glenn Murray set to miss the start of the new season with ligament damage. Blackpool midfielder Thomas Ince is very much on the list and Palace are in advanced talks with Peterborough for highly-rated striker Dwight Gayle. But they will need more to stay up next season.
Kevin Phillips is stalling over a new deal while another target, Vitoria Guimaraes striker Amido Balde has gone to Celtic. But there remains interest in exiled West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie and the club are still waiting to discover whether there is a chance they could take Wilfried Zaha back on loan next season.

EVERTON

WHAT THEY NEED: If the Toffees get as much as £38m for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, then new boss Roberto Martinez will need to spend it wisely. FC Twente winger Leroy Fer, 23, is in his sights. Keisuke Honda, who impressed in midfield for Japan at the Confederations Cup, could be an inspired signing.
Even before he left for Manchester United David Moyes made it clear that Everton need a new striker and Celtic marksman Gary Hooper could be a candidate along with Wigan frontman Arouna Kone.

WHAT THEY NEED: Steve Bruce wants a new keeper. Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel is the favourite but ex-Rangers star Allan McGregor is an alternative along with Aston Villa’s Shay Given.
Bruce also needs another midfielder and could link up again with Lee Cattermole who played for him at Sunderland. Up front the Tigers boss is actively seeking reinforcements and wants Celtic striker Gary Hooper. Burnley’s Charlie Austin is an alternative.

Outs: Tyrell Belford, Jamie Stephens, Danny Wilson (all released), Jamie Carragher (retired), Andy Carroll (West Ham, £16m)
WHAT THEY NEED: A new centre-back. The club are locked in negotiations for Kyriakos Papadopoulos of Schalke and Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori.
They also need a new left back with Jose Enrique keen to move on. Lille star Lucas Digne, 19, is a possible.
It is goals, however, that they need more of - especially with Luis Suarez odds-on to move on. The Reds are optimistic of landing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan but are keeping all of their options open.

Outs: Carlos Tevez (Juventus, £10m), Kolo Toure (Liverpool, free), Ryan McGivern (Hibernian, free), Wayne Bridge (Reading, free), Filippo Mancini, Roque Santa Cruz (all released)
WHAT THEY NEED: A sub keeper. Manuel Pellegrini believes his former Malaga player Willy Caballero could be the man to replace Costel Pantilimon who wants out.
City are also waiting to make their move for the Real Madrid defender Pepe who would cost a lot but bring a massive amount of experience. They also need a new striker and are battling Chelsea and Real Madrid for Napoli star Edinson Cavani. Benfica marksman Oscar Cardozo is also linked.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Ins: Guillermo Varela (Penarol, undisclosed)
Outs: Sean McGinty (Sheffield United, free), Reece Brown, John Cofie, Michele Fornasier, Luke Giverin, Luke Hendrie, Luke McCullough, Paul Scholes, Gyliano Van Velzen, Freddie Veseli (all released)
WHAT THEY NEED: A statement of intent. Gareth Bale (Spurs) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) are the two big candidates but Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara would do very nicely thank you.
The Reds are also looking at Everton’s Marouane Fellaini and are likely and could yet be in the market for another defender with Nemanja Vidic’s injury record an issue.

NEWCASTLE

Ins: None.
Outs: Steve Harper, Yven Moyo, Danny Simpson (all released)
WHAT THEY NEED: More firepower up front. The Magpies are light up front but will offer Demba Ba a return to St James’ Park on loan once Chelsea bring in another top-line striker. Ins: Dejan Lovren (Lyon, £8.5m)
Outs: Frazer Richardson, Danny Butterfield, Dan Seaborne, Ryan Dickson, Ben Reeves, Sam Hoskins, Tommy Forecast, Alberto Seidi (all released)

SWANSEA

Ins: Jose Canas (Real Betis, free)
Outs: Mark Gower (Charlton, free)

The answer looks to be on its way in the shape of Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony while Romelu Lukaku could be an option from Chelsea. The Swans will also need another centre-half if Ashley Williams leaves. A deal for Espanyol’s Jordi Amat looks to be done while attacking midfielder Jonathan De Guzman should soon be sorted out.

TOTTENHAM

Outs: Nathan Byrne (Swindon, free), Jack Barthram (Swindon, free), David Bentley, John Bostock, William Gallas, Jack Munns, Jake Nicholson (all released)

He too looks to be on his way. Spurs are also keen on Atletico Mineiro playmaker Bernard and Aston Villa goal machine Christian Benteke. The club retain an interest in Southampton left-back Luke Shaw.

WEST BROM

Ins: None
Outs: Gonzalo Jara (Nottingham Forest, free), Marc-Antoine Fortune, Zoltan Gera, Romaine Sawyers, Jerome Thomas (all released)
